Jefferies Lures Former Barclays Dealmaker Dean Out of Retirement

(Bloomberg) — Jefferies Financial Group Inc. has hired former Barclays Plc banker Sam Dean to beef up its senior ranks in London, a person with knowledge of the matter said.

Dean is joining Jefferies as a vice chairman of investment banking with a focus on equity capital markets, according to the person, who asked not to be identified because the information is private.

The dealmaker had retired from investment banking after leaving Barclays in 2017. Dean most recently served as the British bank’s co-head of investment banking for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and previously did stints as co-head of ECM at Barclays and Deutsche Bank AG.

In his new role, Dean will work alongside Jefferies’ European investment banking head Dominic Lester and its joint head of European ECM, Luca Erpici, the person said. A representative for Jefferies declined to comment.

Jefferies has been poaching senior bankers amid a slump in broader investment banking activity. It hired Andrea Donzelli, Credit Suisse Group AG’s Italy chief executive officer, Bloomberg News reported last month.

Other recent appointments include UK investment banking Vice Chairman Philip Yates, who previously worked at Perella Weinberg Partners, and Chris Roop, co-head of Americas mergers and acquisitions, who joined from JPMorgan Chase & Co.

Jefferies has also expanded its restructuring practice into Europe by hiring two of the region’s most senior bankers in the space, Rothschild & Co. dealmaker Glen Cronin and ex-Lazard Ltd. executive David Burlison, people with knowledge of the matter said in November.
