Florida GOP Congressman Greg Steube Injured in Accident at Home

(Bloomberg) — Representative Greg Steube, a Florida Republican, was injured at his home on Wednesday when he fell off a roof, according to news reports and his office.

“Congressman Steube was involved in an accident on his property late this afternoon and has sustained several injuries. We will provide additional updates when possible,” the congressman’s office said in a statement on Twitter, without providing further details.

Steube, 44, is part of the narrow majority that took control of the chamber this month. He took note of the party’s situation in December after disappointing midterm elections led to questions about the leadership of Kevin McCarthy.

“When you have such a slim majority, I think it’s gonna be difficult to find somebody else that could get to to 218,” Steube said of grumbling about McCarthy, who was elected speaker on Jan. 7. “If you’re gonna vote no, then why didn’t you either run or support another candidate who was running?”

He spent two years in the Florida Senate and six in the Florida House before his election to Congress. Last week, he became a member of the influential Ways and Means Committee.

The Florida Politics website reported that Steube, who was first elected in 2018 and represents a district that includes Sarasota, fell about 25 feet to the ground, and was found by a staffer for Representative Vern Buchanan, who represents a neighboring district.

He received undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Florida before enlisting in the US Army after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and served in Iraq, according to his US House biography.

His offices in Washington and Sarasota did not immediately respond to inquiries on Wednesday night. Callers to the Washington number hear Steube advising constituents on how to get Federal Emergency Management Agency assistance after Hurricane Ian, which he said had a “devastating impact on our district.”
