Winter Storm Could Bring Rain and Flooding to New York City

A winter storm bringing snow and ice across the central and northeastern US will likely cause minor to moderate flooding Wednesday night around New York City and Long Island.

(Bloomberg) — A winter storm bringing snow and ice across the central and northeastern US will likely cause minor to moderate flooding Wednesday night around New York City and Long Island.

Little more than a few flurries will drop in New York, but winds will rise and tides along the Queens shoreline could rise as much as 2.5 feet above normal, bringing water to flood-prone areas, said Dave Radell, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Upton, New York. In addition, parts of Brooklyn and Staten Island, as well as sites on Long Island, Connecticut and New Jersey, could experience coastal flooding.

“We’re looking at a winter storm for the next day or so impacting the city, there’s potential for a little bit of snow but nothing much to talk about in terms of accumulation,” Radell said. “This looks like an event of basically widespread minor to moderate flooding for the usual locations that normally flood.”

In addition to the flooding, there will be heavy rain overnight and winds reaching 30 to 40 miles per hour. The storm has already touched off tornadoes near Houston Tuesday and caused sporadic power outages across eastern Texas, as well as parts of Arkansas and Missouri, according to PowerOutage.us. In addition to the storm damage, 524 flights into and around the US have been canceled with 241 of those belonging to Southwest Airlines Co., according to FlightAware.

Southwest canceled 16,700 flights over a 10-day period in December.
