(Bloomberg) — Kroger Co. has agreed to pay $68 million to resolve claims by the state of West Virginia that it failed to properly monitor opioid prescriptions filled by the company’s in-store pharmacies.

The grocery chain was the last defendant to settle as part of a suit brought by the West Virginia attorney general’s office against providers of pharmacy services for mishandling opioid prescriptions.

Kroger agreed to pay $34 million immediately as part of the settlement and make $24 million in payments over the next two years. The balance of the settlement will be paid by 2032, state officials said in a release.
