Ukraine Recap: Milley Says Big Challenge Isn’t Lack of Airpower

General Mark Milley, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters the biggest challenge for Ukraine’s counteroffensive is getting through Russia’s “extensive” defensive lines of minefields, not a lack of sufficient airpower. Ukraine has pushed for more rapid action by the US and other nations to supply fighter jets including F-16s.

(Bloomberg) — General Mark Milley, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters the biggest challenge for Ukraine’s counteroffensive is getting through Russia’s “extensive” defensive lines of minefields, not a lack of sufficient airpower. Ukraine has pushed for more rapid action by the US and other nations to supply fighter jets including F-16s.

Ukraine and Russia each said they fended off attacks by the other involving dozens of drones, hours after President Vladimir Putin vowed to retaliate for blasts that forced the suspension of road and rail traffic across the flagship Kerch Strait bridge that links Russia to Crimea.

Uncertainty over global food prices grew after Russia halted the Black Sea grain deal, closing a crucial export route for Ukraine, one of the world’s top suppliers of wheat and vegetable oils. The bigger risk lies longer term, as fractured and costly logistics could spur Ukrainian farmers to further cut harvests.
