CBI Dismisses Tony Danker After Investigation Into Workplace Misconduct

(Bloomberg) — The Confederation of British Industry named its former chief economist, Rain Newton-Smith, as its new director general after Britain’s biggest business lobbying group was rocked by a slew of sexual misconduct allegations.

Newton-Smith will replace Tony Danker who is “dismissed with immediate effect” following a probe into workplace misconduct, the CBI said on Tuesday in a statement. Danker had stepped back last month when the investigation began. Separately, the Guardian newspaper last week published details of different allegations of sexual harassment — unrelated to the Danker case — from more than a dozen women who’ve worked at the CBI.

“The allegations that have been made over recent weeks about the CBI have been devastating,” the CBI’s board said. “While investigations continue into a number of these, it is already clear to all of us that there have been serious failings in how we have acted as an organization. We must do better, and we must be better.”

The board reiterated that Danker “is not the subject of any of the more recent allegations in The Guardian but has determined that his own conduct fell short of that expected of the Director General.”
