UK Steps Up Power Market Contingency Measures as Cold Snap Hits

(Bloomberg) — The UK grid operator issued a rare second-stage electricity market warning that the margin between electricity supply and demand will be tight on Tuesday as a cold snap sweeps Britain.

The electricity market notice was triggered by National Grid Plc’s control room because the shortage can’t be addressed through the usual measures. It doesn’t mean power cuts are imminent. The network is under particular strain as snow and ice is forecast at the same time as wind generation is set to drop.

National Grid has asked three more contingency coal units to prepare to generate on Tuesday to ensure security of power supplies after requesting an Electricite de France SA coal unit to warm up on Monday.

“We are asking generators to make available any additional generation capacity they may have,” the system operator said in a statement. The notice “does not mean electricity supply is at risk.”
