(Bloomberg) — Kyiv’s forces claimed to have liberated at least one village in eastern Ukraine in the first wave of a counteroffensive to take back territory occupied by Russia that’s expected to last for months. “We’re seeing the first results of the counteroffensive actions, localized results,” Valeriy Shershen, a spokesman for Ukraine’s military, said on TV. “The operation was successful.” A video posted by Ukraine’s 68th Jaeger brigade showed soldiers raising the Ukrainian flag over a partially destroyed building in what was identified as Blahodatne, near the border between the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions. The footage couldn’t be independently verified. A second village, Neskuchne, may also have been recaptured.
Russia denies that Ukrainian troops are materially advancing; a defense ministry spokesman said repeated incursions have been repelled and that the on-the-ground situation is fluid. “The situation is developing. Nothing extraordinary is happening,” Vladimir Rogov, a Russian occupation official in the Zaporizhzhia region, said on Telegram. Separately, Russia’s defense ministry accused Ukraine of attempting an attack on one of its Black Sea fleet.
Evacuations continue in flooded regions of Kherson after the Kakhovka Dam was destroyed almost a week ago, causing a humanitarian and environmental disaster. For at least the third time in four days Russian soldiers reportedly attacked civilians involved in rescue efforts. Three people were killed and ten injured when their small boat came under fire, the region’s governor said on Telegram.
