(Bloomberg) — The US and its allies in the Group of Seven understand that the war in Ukraine will last for the medium or long term and planning needs to reflect that, according to a senior State Department official.
The official spoke to reporters Tuesday on the sideline of the UN General Assembly in New York, summarizing a dinner among G7 officials the night before. Allies must ensure that President Vladimir Putin’s project fails and there’s sufficient burden-sharing, the official said.
The US and European Union have injected billions of dollars in military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine to help it repel Russia’s invasion, which is now in its second year, while avoiding direct action that would widen the scope of the conflict.
Long-term assistance to Ukraine includes energy and infrastructure and is expected to bolster the country’s economy to deter Russia in the future, the official said.
